Lambda Legal seeks an Outreach Associate to coordinate Proyecto Igualdad, Lambda Legalís national Latino/Hispanic outreach project, as part of the Education and Public Affairs Department and can be located in its National
Headquarters in New York City or in its Dallas, TX or Atlanta, GA offices.
Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV, through impact litigation, education, and public
policy work. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in New York City, Lambda has regional offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Dallas.
Lambda Legalís civil rights work encompasses a wide range of areas, including federal and state constitutional law issues; discrimination in employment, benefits, housing, insurance, schools and other areas; prevention of harassment and violence; LGBT youth issues; parental rights and adoption; sodomy law reform; and access to healthcare, education and
HIV-related treatments. Lambda Legal uses not only litigation and policy advocacy, but also educational messages, publications and strategies to increase public knowledge about LGBT people and people with HIV , and advance civil rights through change in societal attitudes.
Responsibilities: This Outreach Associate position coordinates Proyecto Igualdad, Lambda Legalís national Latino/Hispanic outreach project. Proyecto Igualdad seeks to engage Latino/Hispanic communities in our ongoing efforts to insure the rights of LGBT and HIV-positive people. Through Proyecto
Igualdad, our goal is to ensure that our outreach to the Latino/Hispanic community incorporates a multi-issue agenda and builds upon and is integrated into the rest of Lambda Legalís education and litigation efforts.
The Outreach Associate develops strategies to inform Latino LGBT people and HIV-positive people about their legal rights and how to enforce them. This staff person helps identify and/or develop advocacy campaigns that activate
members of the community to work toward expanded protections. In addition, they help design creative methods to reach the broader Latino community to build a greater awareness and understanding of and increased support for
LGBT rights. They will assist with the creation and distribution of new materials, develop training curricula and deliver trainings and educational programs in English and Spanish. The Outreach Associate will speak at
conferences, meetings and community forums related to Lambda Legalís work and build, train and provide ongoing support to a volunteer/activist network in key communities across the country.
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual should be
well-organized and adept at maintaining databases, to-do lists, and networks
of activists, The Outreach Associate must be fluent in written and oral Spanish, be experienced in program development and coordination and have some experience with community and/or issue organizing or public advocacy. S/he should be well-organized and adept at maintaining multiple projects
simultaneously. They also should have experience reaching out to and building coalitions and partnerships with ethnically, racially and
economically diverse communities and partners. The Outreach Associate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be experienced developing interactive training curricula and facilitating trainings.
Knowledge of and experience with LGBT and HIV issues a plus.
