Accomplishments:
- Georgia Trend Magazine named Jerry Gonzalez, GALEO’s Executive Director, as
one of 2007’s 100 Most Influential Georgians.
- In 2005 & 2006, GALEO has been the host to U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL),
U.S. Senator Ken Salazar (D-CO), U.S. Senator Bob Menendez and U.S.
Congresswoman Grace Napolitano (D-CA), Chair of the Congressional Hispanic
Caucus Institute. GALEO is the only organization in the state that has drawn the
national attention of such prominent national Latino leaders.
- GALEO also hosted U.S. Congresswoman Hilda Solis (D-CA) in Dalton, Georgia,
during her visit for Congressional Hearings regarding immigration in August 2006.
She met with local Dalton leaders and others actively involved in pro-immigration
efforts. GALEO also co-hosted a press conference with Congresswoman Solis to
draw attention to the benefits immigrants have brought to Gainesville and Dalton
industries.
- Recent successful training completion of 30 bilingual facilitators for the GALEO
Institute for Leadership. Trainers will teach the leadership curriculum in the metro
Atlanta area, Athens, Dalton, Gainesville and Savannah.
- GALEO has played an integral role in the formation of the Georgia Latino Forum.
On January 21, 2006, an historic summit of Latino and Latino-serving organizations in
Georgia took place on the University of Georgia campus in Athens. The summit
provided these organizations with a forum to begin discussion on how to work
together for greater impact within Georgia’s Latino community and to develop a
framework for future collaborative efforts. Out of the 150 delegates attending the
summit, 28 volunteered to move this discussion forward by developing the proposed
framework for collaboration. For the past 7 months, this team has been working
diligently to move this future collaborative effort forward. We are very pleased to
announce that the Georgia Latino Forum (formerly the Latino Organizational Summit)
held it’s First Annual Meeting on Saturday, September 23, 2006, and elected a
working Board of Directors.
